Recommended for: Medium to large freshwater v-hull, bass, pontoon and general fishing boats up to 23'. The 70 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 3,500lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weighs - please refer to our thrust guide.
How It's Unique: Edge is Minn Kota's entry-level bow mount motor, and is designed to be functional, rugged and affordable. It's mount was recently upgraded and now uses an extruded arm built from marine-grade anodized aluminum for increased longevity. All Edge motors feature a fixed speed motor.

The Maxxum line is the next step-up in the Minn Kota series. If you want a more powerful motor (up to 101 lbs), a variable speed motor, or a beefy spring-protected shaft housing you'll want to consider the Maxxum line.
Water Type: Freshwater Only
Shaft Length(s): Shaft lengths of 45" and 52" are available for Edge 70 motors. For help selecting a shaft length, please see our shaft guide.
Motor Features: Fixed 5-Speed Motor, Cable-Driven Foot Pedal, Built-In Direction Indicator, Weedless Wedge Prop, Composite Shaft. (Learn about these features)
Available Upgrades: Edge isn't compatible with any AutoPilot, Sonar or i-Pilot accessories. But it is compatible with select quick release plates and handle extensions - please see the right-hand side product bar.

Additional Information

Mounting Details: This motor is bolted directly to the bow of the boat using the included mounting hardware, and requires drilling into the boat for installation. Ideally, it's best to have access to the underside of the mounting platform in order to secure and fasten the bolting hardware. However, if accessing the underside is impossible you can use no access bolts to secure the motor from the top. For more information see our compatibility and mounting guides.
Mount Dimensions: 21.795" x 5"
Bolting Pattern: Download Bolting Pattern
Wiring Details: Edge 70 can be wired directly to the batteries, and can also be used in conjunction with a plug and receptacle for a cleaner, more professional installation that's easy to remove. To protect your motor from damage, a circuit breaker is also recommended but is not required for installation.
Motor Voltage and Batteries: Edge 70 is a 24 volt motor and requires (2) 12-volt marine batteries. For more information, see our articles on battery selection or battery wiring diagrams.

Pedal Cord Length: 5 Feet

Additional Information

Amperage Draw: 42 amps at maximum speed
Motor Run Time: Important Note: As you likely won't be running your trolling motor perpetually, the actual amount of on-the-water time a motor should allow will be substantially longer than times listed. Actual motor run time can vary depending on conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on calculating motor run time.

  • 20+ Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
  • 4.8 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
  • 2.4 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method: The new-and-improved Edge mount features a multi-hinged design that makes stowing and deploying a snap. When not in use, the motor can be manually removed from the water and naturally rotates into a flat position to convenient stow on the deck. When ready for use, simply slide the motor head and shaft forward, and it effortlessly swings back down into the water.
Motor Steering Method: This Edge model is steered by foot pedal. The cable-driven foot pedal is controlled by rocking your foot back and forth to control motor direction while motor speed is controlled by the rotating dial on the side of the foot pedal.
Shaft Adjustment: An adjustable depth collar makes it easy to set how deep the shaft and propeller sit in the water.
Motor Speed: All Edge motors have a fixed speed motor, including multiple forward and reverse settings. Learn more about fixed vs. variable speed motors.

I bought this in 2011, burned up motor 2012 repaired and burned up again this year. I called the company and was told it was my fault because I was trolling on number 1 speed and the motor was not made for trolling. I thought I bought a trolling motor, I guess not it's more like a junk. (Posted on September 24, 2013)

Broke the lower housing twice, it's made from cheap plastic and shouldn't be since it's a higher thrust unit. I would expected to see heavy duty kydex style housing or aluminum / magnesium on this motor. (Written on 8/22/12) (Posted on November 1, 2012)
