Recommended for: Small to Medium freshwater v-hull, bass, pontoon and general fishing boats up to 21'. The 55lb thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 2,750lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weights - please refer to our thrust guide.
How It's Unique: Varimax is MotorGuide’s value driven motor and is a step-up from the MotorGuide X3. The Varimax series is very unique as it offers an inexpensive variable speed motor in both bow and transom mount models. Like the X3, all Varimax models are hand controlled, but Varimax has more bells and whistles such as the BluVis battery status indicator.

The MotorGuide Freshwater trolling motoris the next model up from the Varimax. The Freshwater series motors are foot control bow mount motors which feature a heavy-duty motor mount. However, all Freshwater motors have a 5 forward speed motor while the Varimax motors are variable speed, have a reverse gear, and are more power efficient.

Additional Information

Amperage Draw: 42 amps at maximum speed
Motor Run Time: Important Note: As you likely won't be running your trolling motor perpetually, the actual amount of on-the-water time a motor should allow will be substantially longer than times listed. Actual motor run time can vary depending on conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on calculating motor run time.

  • 20+ Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
  • 4.8 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
  • 2.4 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method: With a single hand, you can remove your motor from the water without needing to fuss with buttons, levers or locks. Pull the motor slightly up to disengage, then rotate back for convenient stowing.
Motor Steering Method: Steer the Varimax with the included hand tiller. Varimax's steering control lets you fine-tune the amount of play in the steering column. Want smooth steering for precise maneuvering? It's easy to dial the tension back using the tension collar. Need a more rigid steering column to maintain a course? Tighten down the collar to eliminate steering play and keep the motor in place. Varimax adjusting collar lets you customize tension for any situation, making motor operation more convenient.
Shaft Adjustment: An adjustable depth collar makes it easy to set how deep the shaft and propeller sit in the water.
Motor Speed: All MotorGuide VariMax motors have a variable speed motor. Learn more about fixed vs. variable speed motors.
