Minn Kota released the original PowerDrive trolling motor in 1987 and kicked off the electric steer era. Thirty years later that legacy continues with a full redesign for 2017, including the new and improved i-Pilot GPS system and Bluetooth smartphone functionality. The PowerDrive offers anglers the full range of Minn Kota features and options, all at an affordable price.
CoPilot and i-Pilot offer unprecedented boat control with wireless and GPS capabilities, while the standard wired foot pedal enables hands-free, precision steering. Combined with additional options such as US2 sonar and standard features like Digital Maximizer and a Weedless Wedge prop, the PowerDrive is a trusted motor that will serve you well while leaving some extra dollars in your pocket for gas and beer! PowerDrive 54 Pontoon Full Details
Small to medium freshwater v-hull, bass, pontoon and general fishing boats up to 21'. The 54 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 2,750lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weighs - please refer to our thrust guide.
How It's Unique
The PowerDrive series is a step-up from the Maxxum line of motors. Compared to Maxxum, PowerDrive offers electronic steering (vs. cable control), advanced control options (such as CoPilot & i-Pilot). Additionally, the Pontoon model includes an aluminum quick release plate for quickly removing the motor from the deck of the pontoon boat.
Terrova motors are a step-up from PowerDrive models and offer larger thrust options of 80 and 101 lbs. While both models are compatible with AutoPilot/CoPilot/i-Pilot accessories, only the Terrova line offers the ability to use a foot pedal AND a wireless CoPilot or i-Pilot controller simultaneously.
The PowerDrive 54 Pontoon motors comes with a 48" shaft. For help selecting a shaft length, please see our shaft guide.
Variable Speed Motor, Electric Foot Pedal, Aluminum Quick Release Plate, Digital Maximizer, Built-In Battery Gauge, Weedless Wedge Prop, Composite Shaft. (Learn about these features)
This motor is bolted directly to the bow of the boat using the included mounting hardware, and requires drilling into the boat for installation. Ideally, it's best to have access to the underside of the mounting platform in order to secure and fasten the bolting hardware. However, if accessing the underside is impossible you can use no access bolts to secure the motor from the top. For more information see our compatibility and mounting guides.

- Foot pedal
- Power leads
- Mounting hardware
- Owners manual
What Else Is Required:
1 Marine Battery, Battery Charger, Circuit Breaker (Recommended)
50 amps at maximum speed
42 amps at maximum speed
Important Note: As you likely won't be running your trolling motor perpetually, the actual amount of on-the-water time a motor should allow will be substantially longer than times listed. Actual motor run time can vary depending on conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on calculating motor run time.
- 20 Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
- 4 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
- 2 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method:
PowerDrive's Deploy-Assist lever makes it easy to deploy the motor by squeezing a lever, raising the shaft and deploying it into the water. When not in use, the shaft and head can be quickly removed from the water and laid on the deck for storage.
Motor Steering Method:
The motors is steered via the included foot pedal which can control motor speed and direction. If the CoPilot or i-Pilot accessories are purchased, PowerDrive V2 can also be controlled via wireless remote control. Note: If a CoPilot or i-Pilot wireless remote is installed, the foot pedal will NOT function. If you'd like to be able to use both a pedal and wireless remote simultaneously, you'll need to choose a Terrova motor.
An adjustable depth collar makes it easy to set how deep the shaft and propeller sit in the water.
All PowerDrive motors are variable speed. Learn more about fixed vs. variable speed motors.
The motor's composite shaft caries a lifetime guarantee. If it's ever broken - regardless of the circumstances - Minn Kota will replace it at no charge. The rest of the motor caries a two year warranty backed up by hundreds of local Minn Kota service centers across the country.

20' Playbuoy Pontoon
I was torn between a 12V MinnKota and a 24V, which was replacing my old Motorguide. To save money, I decided to stick with the 12V. The thrust was similar to my old motor, but when I got it installed, it performed much better than my old one ever did and lasted for hours. The best part was that I received the new motor one day after ordering it. Amazing. Thanks Trollingmotors.net!!
Life of a trolling motor
My over all opinions of the trolling motor are good Am a catfish Guide so it has been use a lot for drifting baits but for a pontoon that is 20 or larger I would recommend a bigger trolling motor especially if your dealing with wind After two years of service the foot control has started to give some problems and I know a few that’s had problems with the steering motor but we are not weekend warriors we fish at least three to four days a week so the trolling motor gets a lot of use
Skeeter Pontoon 20' Fishing Barge
The PowerDrive 54 Pontoon trolling motor is a perfect unit for my needs, It was easy to install and performed well with my boat, I was able to troll against a breeze of 10 to 12 mph without issue and never used the highest setting. If you want a co-pilot make sure you order the correct one for your motor, the new motors are blue tooth and use a different co-pilot. I realized I ordered the wrong unit and contacted Clayton with Trollingmotors.net and he promptly provided the correct part number I needed. His service was great and so far I am very pleased with my new motor. Just received the correct co-pilot so when I get it installed and a chance to get back to the lake I will submit a review on it as well. If it performs as well as the motor with a foot pedal I am sure I will be happy....oh yeah, I ran in the wind and in wind free coves for a cumulative time of approximately 4 hours and the battery meter never moved of off full. I am very pleased with the performance of the Pontoon 54.
17' Bennington Pontoon
Fantastic website, great customer service and order experience. Got the motor the next day - couldn't believe it! Only gave it 4 stars because as much as I like the motor, I should have spent more for the Terrova because of the better stow and deploy. Will buy my next motor from these guys for sure.
22' Suntracker fishing barge XP3
The V2 54 pontoon is perfect. It moves the boat around perfect. I don't see the need for a 24v trolling motor for our pontoon. Use it all day fishing the banks of the river and still have plenty of battery left.
Delivery: First off I'd like to comment on how fast I received my new trolling motor since I didn't pay any shipping fees. Best service ever! Trolling Motor: I mounted the Minn Kota Powerdrive V2 54 on my pontoon boat in hopes that I could still maneuver well enough to fish the bank like I do in my bass boat. (This is my first pontoon boat). I was pleasantly surprised, the 20' pontoon boat handles very well with the V2 54 Minn Kota. New generation of trolling motors: I have used older Minn Kota electric steer trolling motors and was a little put off by their sluggish response. This new motor responds very quickly and I have no problem changing directions and accelerating off the bank when necessary to avoid hitting the riprap. Those of you who have used older generation electric steer trolling motors know exactly what I'm talking about. Battery life: I beat the banks all day with this new 12 volt trolling motor and expected the one deep cycle battery to be seriously discharged. That was not the case, I still had a lot of runtime left. I am very pleased with my new purchase.
These guys are amazing to deal with. Ordered on Wed. got it in two days WOW!!! This is my second V2 Power Drive, wore the first one out. These are excellent motors and the pontoon model fit perfect for my pontoon. Great for fishing use and slow trolling. Thanks again for your outstanding service, I will highly urge my friends to use you for all their trolling motor needs.
Bought this for my pontoon. Easy installation, can't wait to get to the lake. These people are great to deal with. Order it on Wed. got it in two days. Installation instructions were easy to understand. Ready for some fishing!!!
The motor is nice a pulls my pontoon around easily wasn't sure with only a 12v so I bought the biggest one and at 54 lbs. of thrust it worked very well. Haven't had it out on a very windy day but assume it will do at least fair in those conditions. The electric steer is really nice takes almost no getting used to and the motor uses almost no battery power. Had it out for 5 hrs. the other day and still had 12.4 volts on the battery charger when I came home. Good buy and performs up to expectations.
