2017 Minn Kota Ultrex - Reviews from Fishermen
The last couple of years have seen incredible trolling motor innovations from Minn Kota. First, we saw the introduction of the Ulterra line with automatic stow and deploy and power trim. We thought it would be a niche product but it quickly turned into a reliable best-seller.
Next we saw the introduction of 72” shaft lengths, opening up the market for the long-neglected medium size center console and deep-V boat owners.
Then, Minn Kota decided to relaunch their i-Pilot system. Built around an advanced new GPS receiver, redesigned software and Bluetooth, the 2017 Minn Kota i-Pilot has blown the doors off everyone’s expectations. Spot Lock keeps you on the mark like white on rice! Truly incredible.
And if that wasn’t enough, Minn Kota decided to give bass fishermen their very own exclusive trolling motor in the form of the Ultrex with Power Steering and i-Pilot. This motor has been an incredible success in the few months it’s been on the market and so far the biggest problem has been that Minn Kota simply hasn’t been able to produce them fast enough and the waiting list is currently over six months for certain models!
If you want a basic overview of this motor, please see our our earlier write-up. Last month we personally emailed the first group of customers who purchased an Ultrex to solicit their feedback. Here’s what we heard:
“I love the trolling motor no complaints”
“I am 67years old and have owned all types of trolling motors. By far this Minn Kota Ultrex is the best I have ever owned."
PROS: It is simple to operate and has all the bells and whistles!
CON: The only con is the price.”
“I really like the trolling motor. Everything seems to work the way it is advertised. My problem is i have a ranger z521 that had a motorguide and now that i have put the minn kota on it sets up so high when stowed the custom cover no longer fits so now i am going to have to oder a new cover that is going to cost me 1000 dollars.”
“I love my new Minn Kota Ultrex. It was very simple to install. Everything I needed was in the box. The spot lock is the best feature about the Ultrex. My only complaint is the Knob that controls the tension is hard to get to after you have mounted the foot pedal.”
“I am impressed with the spotlock feature, it's dead on. This is going to make a hugh difference fishing in the wind. I have mainly been fishing open water this winter and have not had a chance to evaluate the responsiveness of fishing tight to cover. I think it will work fine once I get used to it. So far very happy with purchase.”
“The new Minn Kota motor seems to be everything I did research on before making this big purchase.”
“The ULTREX is an amazing trolling motor, it's changing the way I fish, gone are the days of staying on a point in the wind, SPOT lock.
Preset positions are a really cool feature. After launching the boat I can troll over to the first place I like to start on a local lake and never even touch the foot pedal, I pull out the rods and by the time it locks on the spot I am making a first cast.
The remote control is useful, once locked on a spot, you have the ability to move any direction of that spot and never touch the foot pedal while still fishing at the same time. Less time working the foot pedal equals more time casting. So many additional features I have not mastered yet.
I find the wind is less of a challenge with the SPOT Lock feature, gone are the days of fighting to stay on point while keeping your foot on the foot pedal and working a Carolina rig or jig in 10 to 20 ft of water.
The responsiveness of foot pedal to the control head is unmatched, it's instantaneous, you still have the feel of the boat direction in relation to the position of the pedal and don't have to look at the directional indicator.
Mounting was easy as the ULTREX base plate holes align with the MAXXUM base plate.
It should be noted that you do have to be on the water to calibrate the directional indicator compass. I took a chance and mounted the compass on the bow of the boat beside the TM and have had no issues with the magnetic offset.
The larger foot pedal of the ULTREX does not fit well in the original Comfort Troll recess tray, however Comfort Troll has a new tray available and it works fine.
No CONS to date. ULTREX 112. 2002 Ranger 518 DVX”
“I've only gotten out twice since I installed the motor, but it is great! The i pilot link is such a useful tool, along with the spotlock. There are a lot of features I did not get a chance to use yet, but I am very happy with the purchase, and know it will make fishing easier, along with easier boat control.
Installation took a bit longer than I thought it would, but I had to make a few modifications to my aluminum boat to mount it, and had to install a new battery and rewire everything for the 36 volt system, so that was a big part of the time. I do have interference on my humminbird unit, except at high speed. I am working on trying to eliminate this. It is wired in to the 1st battery out of the 3 trolling motor batteries, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.
I also have a side imaging transducer mounted on the motor. It rubs on the motor rest when I raise and lower the motor. I wish there was a way to avoid that, but there isn't. But all in all, I'm super pumped about the motor and can't wait to figure out how to use all the tools it has to offer.”
“I fished my first tourney with the new ultrex, I have to say it’s awesome. Glad I got it when I did because I heard that its really hard to get them now.”
