All Minn Kota saltwater motors are treated with premium grade alloys to protect them from the corrosive effects of saltwater. Every motor undergoes a thorough initial cleaning process, is then coated with special zinc armored plating, and is finally finished with a durable polyester paint. Electronics are fully encapsulated and props are fixed with a sacrificial anode. The end result is a motor that is built to withstand the harshest of saltwater environments.
MotorGuide saltwater motors are finished similarly to withstand extended exposure to saltwater and corrosion.
Minn Kota AutoPilot is a navigation system that keeps your trolling motor steering in the same direction without having to hold it in place. The system uses an internal compass to maintain a straight and true heading without manually having to keep the motor pointed in the same direction.
AutoPilot has a number of useful applications, including:
- Trolling along a ledge, shelf or current line
- Following and fishing a shoreline
- Maintaining a heading across open water
AutoPilot is available for Minn Kota PowerDrive V2, Terrova, Riptide SP and Riptide ST models, and MotorGuide Xi5 series motors equipped with Pinpoint GPS.
Never wonder how much battery life remains again! With the push of a button on your motor, you can instantly see how much battery life remains. On motors with i-Pilot, you can simply take a look at the integrated battery meter on the screen of your handheld remote. Knowing your battery's level allows you to make the best use of your motor's run time, and ultimately, catch more fish.
Bowguard 360 is a coil based safeguard that protects your motor and shaft from impact. It breaks away on motor/shaft impact and automatically resets itself. This reduces stress during collisions and ensures your trip isn't cut short by a broken motor. Additionally, it detaches (along with the shaft) from the mount for added convenience and storage. The Bowguard mount is available on all Fortrex and Riptide SF motors as well as select Maxxum and Riptide SM motors.
Bluetooth is now standard for all 2017 and later Minn Kota i-Pilot and i-Pilot Link motors. This technology enables communication between your handheld remote and the motor, and also powers a new smarthphone app that gives you command of speed, steering, Spot Lock, Auto Pilot and Rabbit Mode, as well as the ability to download software updates. Bluetooth is further used for the Heading Sensor to communicate with the motor.
Guaranteed for life, both Minn Kota and MotorGuide composite shafts are flexible and stronger than steel. They are guaranteed not to break, corrode or kink, and are the only trolling motor shafts that carry lifetime guarantees.
CoPilot is a wireless remote system for Minn Kota motors featuring a small key fob to control speed and direction from anywhere on the boat. In addition to the remote, a CoPilot Wireless Foot Pedal is available that provides hands-free motor control with a foot pedal. MotorGuide also offers wireless control options on their Wireless and Xi5 Series of trolling motors.
As discussed above, variable speed motors are more efficient - and can run longer on a charge - than fixed speed motors. Both Minn Kota and MotorGuide add technology to their variable speed motors to help them run as long as possible. Minn Kota calls their technology 'Digital Maximizer' while MotorGuide simply refers to their variable speed motors as 'digital motors'.
Both these terms / features simply mean that you're getting a variable speed motor that has been engineered to run as long as possible on a single charge. These technologies are built-in to EVERY variable speed motor from Minn Kota and MotorGuide. So if you're buying a variable speed Minn Kota motor, it's guaranteed to have Digital Maximizer technology.
You'll know exactly which way the motor is pointed with the easy-to-read directional indicator on the motor's head. The indicator (many of which are illuminated) makes maneuvering your boat into the next casting position fast and simple, regardless of light conditions or existing motor orientation.
Fixed speed motors usually have 5 forward and 3 reverse pre-set speeds to choose from. Variable speed motors offer infinite speed control, and allow you to set the motor speed exactly where you want it. Fixed speed motors are generally less expensive while variable speed motors offer more precise control.
Additionally, variable speed motors are significantly more efficient than fixed speed motors (especially at low speeds), and can subsequently run longer on a single charge battery. So when considering your motor options make sure to remember you'll get longer run times with variable speed motors.
Now standard accessory with all i-Pilot and i-Pilot Link motors, Minn Kota's Heading Sensor is a bluetooth enabled digital compass that allows your boat position to be factored into motor operation. This in turn enables the "jog" feature that allows your motor to move your boat five feet at a time in any direction from your spot lock position.
Heading Sensor connects to your motor via a bluetooth connection, and is powered by connecting to one of your 12v batteries. For more information, please see this installation guide.
Minn Kota i-Pilot uses GPS technology to steer and control your trolling motor automatically. This technology enables some great features, such as using your trolling motor to automatically re-trace fishing lines (iTracks) or to hover over a fishing location automatically (Spot Lock). In addition to GPS features, i-Pilot includes AutoPilot and the ability to control speed and direction, as well as "jog" five feet in any direction from a spot lock position.
i-Pilot Link has all the same features as i-Pilot but also integrates with your Humminbird fish finder and LakeMaster chipset to enable underwater contour tracking and various other options accessed through your finder's interface.

Minn Kota Lift Assist alleviates the strain of hauling your trolling motor in and out of the water all day long. Depending on the motor, this technology takes the form of either a gas-charged piston (Fortrex/Riptide Fortrex) or a spring-loaded mechanism (Terrova/Riptide Terrova). In either case, the strength required to stow the motor is significantly reduced.
Pinpoint GPS is MotorGuide's answer to the Minn Kota i-Pilot. This amazing technology allows you to do a number of useful things when out on the water. Use the anchor feature to hold your boat against drift from wind or current within five feet of a fixed GPS coordinate. You can further use the directional controls to "jog" your boat in 5-foot increments in any direction. Heading lock navigates your boat to a specific compass heading. The route feature enables you to record and playback up to eight routes of up to four miles each. Cruise control will hold your speed while keeping you headed in a specific direction.

Power Steering is the revolutionary technology featured on the new Minn Kota Ultrex motors. Operating in the same manner as a car with power steering, this features alleviates foot fatigue but gives you the same touch and feel you've grown accustomed to on traditional cable motors.
Spot Lock with Jog is the GPS feature that allows you to "virtually anchor" in a position of your choosing, and then "jog" five feet at a time in any direction you choose. Simply press the anchor button on your i-Pilot remote or foot pedal, and the motors will lock on to your current coordinates and keep your within a few feet of that spot. As soon as current or wind begins to move your boat, the motor will activate and automatically keep you on your spot! Want to chase the fish? Just press one of the direction buttons and you can move your boat five feet at a time in any direction your choose. With dual GPS receivers accuracy the accuracy is truly incredible, keeping you within several feet of your anchor position.
Steering Lock allows you to take your foot off the pedal on the Minn Kota Ultrex motors without losing your heading. When you remove your foot, there is no recoil and your motor stays pointed in the direction you want.
The extendable tiller makes hand control convenient by adding an additional 6" of reach. Additionally, the handle can tilt up 45 degrees to make operation while standing much easier and more comfortable.
Universal Sonar 2 (US2) is the transducer built-in to the bottom of Minn Kota trolling motors and is a must-have feature for anyone serious about seeing what's going on below. Compatible with all major fishfinder brands, US2 features a transducer built-in to the underside of the motor, eliminating unsightly and troublesome wires.
Additionally, US2 uses dual beam sonar technology (83 and 200 khz) to provide an accurate view of activity beneath the surface.Built-in sonar can also be found on MotorGuide Tour Edition, Wireless Series and Xi5 motors but is simply referred to as 'Sonar' - not US2.
Don't limit your casting possibilities! Head into the weeds with weedless props. Designed to operate without catching or snagging, you can venture into the thick stuff without fear of chopping or hacking.
