Frequently Asked Questions
We’re the nation’s #1 store for trolling motors, a reputation we earned by treating our customers with respect and dedication. That means great pricing, no tax, free shipping, reliable information, and quickly taking care of any problems. We’re also dedicated fishermen who use and understand many of the products we sell, so we can relate to your needs and concerns. We’d love the opportunity to earn your business and we will do our best to make sure you are 100% satisfied.
Please see our Thrust Guide. It can also be helpful to Google the make and model of your boat along with the word “trolling motor” to see what other fishermen have posted in the forums about their choices and experiences.
Please see our Shaft Length Guide and pay very close attention to your measurements. If in doubt, go long!
Generally speaking, anyone who is reasonably handy can install a trolling motor on his or her own. However, we have some key recommendations:
- Get a friend to help you – trolling motors can be heavy!
- Measure, measure and measure again before you do any drilling.
- Pay very close attention to your electrical: Use correct gauge wire, a proper circuit breaker, and make sure there are no exposed wires that could lead to a short.
We strongly recommend using a circuit breaker for two reasons:
- It’s a relatively inexpensive insurance policy on your motor in case your prop gets fouled or there is some type of power surge.
- Coast Guard regulations require them.
You don’t need one, but they are extremely convenient and allow you to easily remove your motor for service, storage, trailering, family days or using your boat cover. Most fishermen are purchasing them these days.
If you plan on getting a quick release bracket, it makes sense to get a plug and receptacle. They allow you to easily connect and disconnect your wiring for charging, service, storage, trailering, etc.
YES! i-Pilot/GPS control is one of the greatest boating innovations ever. These are far and away our best-selling motors and for good reason: Fishermen love the versatility that the features provide, particularly the “spot lock” or virtual anchoring ability. Please refer to our detailed overview.
- CoPilot is a wireless key fob that controls speed and direction. A CoPilot wireless foot pedal can be purchased and used separately.
- AutoPilot is essentially cruise control - point your motor in a specific direction at a specific speed and the internal compass will keep you on course
- i-Pilot is a software-driven GPS control system that includes both CoPilot and AutoPilot, while also giving you new features such as Spot Lock and Record-A-Track. See our i-Pilot overview for an in-depth tutorial.
Most motors come with 3-5 feet of 10 gauge wire, but for longer runs, you’ll want to use something heavier. Take a look at this chart for specific gauge recommendations.
Both Minn Kota and MotorGuide come with two-year warranties on the motors and electronics, and lifetime warranties on the composite shafts. Valid only in the United States.
Yes, when you purchase your motor there will be an offer in the box to purchase an extended warranty via the manufacturer. Prices and terms vary from motor to motor, but the extension is generally for an additional two years.
Both Minn Kota and MotorGuide have outstanding warranty support and they want you out fishing again as quickly as possible. Take a deep breath and reach out to the manufacturer directly or to one of their many authorized service centers. You’ll need your motor serial number and a copy of your receipt with the date of purchase.
You can spend the rest of your life reading about batteries on the internet – there are just so many options. Generally speaking, we like AGM batteries with a medium-to-high group rating. They cost more, but they last longer. If you’re on a budget, don’t sweat it, traditional lead-acid batteries will work well. For more information, see our Battery Selection Guide
We strongly advise against it because you will immediately void your warranty. Saltwater is highly corrosive and you run a serious risk of destroying your motor.
