X3 55SW Digital Hand Control Full Details
Small to medium sized freshwater v-hull, pontoon, jon and general fishing boats up to 21'. The 55 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 2,750 lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weighs - please refer to our thrust guide.
How It's Unique:
The X3 Digital series is a step-up from the Freshwater series and the regular X3 in that it now features variable control. The X3 55SW Digital Hand Control is only available with 55 lbs of thrust.
The X3 Digital Hand Control is only available in 50" shaft length. For help selecting a shaft length, please see our shaft guide.
Variable Control, Combined Composite and Stainless Shaft, Two-Blade Prop. (Learn about these features)
This motor is bolted directly to the bow of the boat using the included mounting hardware, and requires drilling into the boat for installation. Ideally, it's best to have access to the underside of the mounting platform in order to secure and fasten the bolting hardware. However, if accessing the underside is impossible you can use no access bolts to secure the motor from the top. For more information see our compatibility and mounting guides.
X3 Digital 55 Hand Control can be wired directly to the batteries, and can also be used in conjunction with a plug and receptacle for a cleaner, more professional installation that's easy to remove. To protect your motor from damage, a circuit breaker is also recommended but is not required for installation.

Motor Run Time:
Important Note: As you likely won't be running your trolling motor perpetually, the actual amount of on-the-water time a motor should allow will be substantially longer than times listed. Actual motor run time can vary depending on conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on calculating motor run time.
- 20+ Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
- 4.8 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
- 2.4 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method:
The X3 series motors features a new aircraft-grade extruded aluminum mount. When the trolling motor is not in use, the motor can be manually removed from the water and naturally rotates into a flat position to convenient stow on the deck. When ready for use, simply slide the motor head and shaft forward, and it effortlessly swings back down into the water.
Motor Steering Method:
The MotorGuide X3 55 SW Hand Control is steered by hand.
An adjustable depth collar makes it easy to set how deep the shaft and propeller sit in the water.

X3 55SW Digital Hand Control Reviews
Aluminum Jon Baot 14'
I bought the MotorGuide X3 and for me it was a mistake. Other than one visit to a service center, to correct a loose tiller handle (motor would not turn off), the motor has performed ok. The problem I have is that the unit is a saltwater model and with only short visits to the coast, the unit is corroding already. The coating is peeling off the motor mount, the coating on the motor is lifting and other hardware on the mount is heavily rusted, but not all parts. Clearly some of the motor mount parts were not stainless or just poor quality stainless. I understand that the motor itself cannot be stainless, but with the discoloration around the shaft connection point, I can see problems coming. I contacted MotorGuide and they told me this is normal and that the system is not what they consider as corrosion, after viewing pictures from the service center. And yes, the motor is new enough to still be under warranty. They told me I didn’t wash the motor enough which is total cop out speculation. I always wash my boat after trips to the coast. My opinion is just one, so take it as you like. I blame myself as I was told by one service center not to buy from MotorGuide. I did some homework, checked prices and ultimately chose MotorGuide because my previous unit was a MotorGuide and lasted more than 10 years. What I didn’t realize is that MotorGuide is now made in China. Do yourself a favor before buying a new trolling motor – call your service center (make sure they don’t rep any certain brand) an ask them which company stands behind their product – then choose.
