Minn Kota's Engine Mount motors stay hidden under the water! Attached to your outboard motor, it provides the convenience of a trolling motor without the hassle or unsightliness of having one on-deck. Perfect for dual-purpose recreation and fishing boats, these engine mount motors can be controlled using the corded remote and feature sealed electronics, an interference-free composite mount and Digital Maximizer for extended run-time.
EM 55 Full Details
For dual-purpose recreation and fishing boat up to 21'. The 55 lbs thrust motor is recommended for boats weighing up to 2,750lbs. For more help picking the right thrust level - or to learn how much your boat weights - please refer to our thrust guide.
How It's Unique
Minn Kota Engine mount motors are unique as the motor attaches to the cavitation plate of your existing outboard engine, rather than the bow or transom of your boat. This unique motor is ideal for dual-purpose boats, or in scenarios where mounting a traditional trolling motor is not possible. The motor includes a wired remote that controls prop speed and direction (forward or reverse), while the motor is steered with your boat's existing steering wheel. Available in thrust levels up to 160 lbs, Minn Kota engine mount motors are a good fit for all sizes of boats.
Be sure to look over the mounting specs of the Engine Mount motor to be sure it is compatible with your outboard motor.
Engine mount motors attach to the outboard engine using a fixed mount and do not have a shaft like traditional trolling motors.
Variable Speed Motor, Wired Remote Control, Digital Maximizer, Weedless Wedge Prop, Composite Mount. (Learn about these features)
Engine Mount motors aren't compatible with any AutoPilot, Sonar or i-Pilot accessories, but there are a few accessories that compliment the EM motors - please see the right-hand side product bar.
Mounting an engine mount trolling motor requires drilling into the cavitation plate of your outboard engine. Because this process is more complicated than installing a traditional trolling motor, we have designed a comprehensive Compatibility & Installation Guide. Please read through this guide to ensure that your outboard engine is compatible with the Engine Mount motor, and that you understand what steps are required for installation.
3.75" on each side of the "spine" on the outboard engine (located on the cavitation plate)
EM 55 is wired directly to the battery. To protect your motor from damage, a circuit breaker is also recommended but is not required for installation.

- Wired Remote Control
- Waterproof control module
- Power leads

What Else Is Required:
1 Marine Battery, Battery Charger, Circuit Breaker (Recommended)
50 amps at maximum speed
Motor Run Time:
Important Note: As you likely won't be running your trolling motor perpetually, the actual amount of on-the-water time a motor should allow will be substantial longer than times listed. Actual motor run time can vary depending on conditions (winds, waves, etc) and the type of battery used. Listed below are run-time estimates assuming a 100 amp hour rated battery. To learn more, please see our article on calculating motor run time.
- 20+ Hours: At slow, trolling speeds that draw 5 amps or less
- 4 Hours: Approx. run time with throttle 50% open
- 2 Hours: Approx. run time with the motor at full throttle
Stow and Deploy Method:
Engine mount motors are attached to the boat's outboard engine. When the outboard motor is stowed or deployed, so is the trolling motor.
Motor Steering Method:
Engine mount trolling motors are steered with the boat's existing steering wheel.
Engine mount motors are installed to the outboard engine using a fixed mount and do not have a shaft like traditional trolling motors.
All Engine Mount trolling motors are variable speed. Learn more about fixed vs. variable speed motors.

20 ft. Bayliner Capri
I purchased the EM55. The install was easy. My first trip out I used a marine 24 battery and it lasted about 2 hours before I ran out of power. I was also running my fish finder on the same battery. Next trip I doubled up with a 24 and 27. It lasted from 7am to 6pm. I have power steering on my boat so it's a bit hard to steer. I just hope it doesn't mess the power steering unit up. Overall I am very satisfied with the unit. I get lots of what the heck is that when I launch my boat. Lol
I was sad to have to sell my blue water boat but really happy that I just bought a Monterey 18'. The first thing I did was ordered a new Minnkota 55 EM because I loved trolling for Kokenee. I had one on my blue water and I have to have one on my Monterey now. Sure enough I got it online installed it in just a few hours and on when I launched it for the first time I had three guys saying "Wow, that's cool." Love it!! Won't ever have a boat without one! I only wish they sold them in retail stores too. - Rob Anderson
